With a radioactive lifetime of 1,000-10,000 years, nuclear waste is our undeniable human legacy. How might we re-imagine nuclear waste to provide a positive social and economic benefit to communities safely, securely, and with minimal regulatory changes?

WHO WE ARE

Sustainium is an early-stage clean-tech company that is developing an innovative technology to safely and securely harness heat from spent nuclear fuel 

What we do

 

Sustainium works with academia, nuclear facilities, wastewater treatment plants, and other end-users to use one form of waste (nuclear waste) to turn another form of waste (sewage sludge) into fertilizer and other sustainable biomasses.

The problem

The US produces over 12,000 tons of sewage sludge every day, most of which is transported to landfills where it decomposes into methane and other dangerous greenhouse gases. In 2018 alone, these emissions contributed approximately the same amount of CO2 as four coal burning power plants in one year.

In parallel, nuclear facilities face an uncertain future in the global energy mix despite their promise towards meeting a decarbonized future. Growing negative public perception of nuclear energy, high operating and construction costs for new reactors, and burdensome costs for storing and managing spent nuclear fuel present a serious for a clean energy future.

Whether or not nuclear energy remains part of the energy mix, current plants are producing tons of waste which will need to be stored securely and safely for hundreds of years.

A new path forward for safely harnessing spent nuclear fuel for good is possible.

OUR SOLUTION

Our technology valorizes nuclear waste by harnessing an otherwise wasted heat source that is capable of replacing natural gas drying techniques used by wastewater treatment facilities.

We have developed a renewable, affordable heat source to dry wastewater sludge and convert it into sustainable biomass products like fertilizer and fuel.

We do this through a unique technological and engineering process that harnesses heat from spent nuclear fuel safely and securely with no danger of leakage or radioactivity.

The solution does not require transporting nuclear waste; designing, licensing and constructing new nuclear waste storage solutions; or introducing any new legislation.
